Animal Vegetable Miracle!

I recommend this book to everyone!  It is great.  It is written by Barbara Kingsolver, and is a New York Times Bestseller.

The Kingsolver family leaves behind their city lifestyle to live off the land for 1 whole year. They grow their own crops, raise their own animals, and buy locally from their neighbors. I love it.
It will open your eyes to what you are putting in your mouth and the source of where it came. It is really entertaining too.

The other day I bought juice boxes for my kids and here is what I read on the back. I was kind of shocked...

It is crazy to think that is cheaper to grow an apple, squeeze the juice out of it, put it on a huge boat, ship it to the US, stick it on a truck, drive it to Colorado and stock it on the Target shelves, than buy it from someone locally?  Where have we gone wrong?  Food for thought I guess, literally.....

Anyways I  have been so excited about this concept and have been making strides to become more self sufficient.   Larry helped me can 36 pints of green beans, Abbie, and Dana helped  too, let me not forget.
also our family has been kind enough to share the wealth of their gardens (since we live under HOA rule, and we can't really grow a garden where we live currently).

Josh's Dad just sent us home with at least 50 pounds of corn, so we cut it and froze it.

I am a little excited about all of this, but it has been really fun! I am going to the cannery on Sept 8th to can salsa, if any of my Colorado counterparts want any goods, let me know and I can pick you up whatever, wheat, beans, rice, flour, sugar, refried beans, salsa....... Happy harvesting!
