Chocolate Puppies and Chocolate Goodness!

Oh no......we did not get a puppy!  Brownie, Grandpa Paul's dog had puppies awhile ago and they decided to keep this adorable little pup named "Snicker".  My kids are in love. It's a great set up, see Grandpa and Anita keep the dog and my kids get to play with it.  it's kinda like grandkids........... you play with them and then you send 'em home?  We get to play with the dog and then say goodbye.  Now that's my kind of pet!

I am going to post this recipe because it turned out SO YUMMY! This is a classic recipe of Josh's Grandma's called "Picnic Cake".

Each summer they would take a break from farming and head up to the Rocky Mountains for a Picnic (usually when family came in from St. Louis).  So when I baked this cake on Sunday
it was kind of nostalgic for Josh's Dad.....he said it tasted just like he remembered and I think he single handedly ate half the cake!!!

Here is the recipe in honor of Doris Eisenach,
may all your picnics be as yummy as hers!

Picnic Cake

8 oz. package of dates cut up

pour 1 1/2 cups boiling water over dates and 1 tsp. soda. Cool.

Cream together:

1 cup sugar
3/4 cups softened butter

Add: 2 eggs and beat.

Sift together:

2 cups flour
3/4 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt

Add dry ingredients alternately with liquid from date mixture. Add the dates and stir gently.

Pour in 9x13 greased pan. Top with 1/2 cup nuts and 1/2 cup chocolate chips (or Chocolate chips and butterscotch chips) Push down gently.

Sift 1/4 cup sugar over top.  Bake 350 degrees 35 minutes  (I covered with foil the last 10 minutes so it wouldn't brown too much) Enjoy!
